On June 14th, 2018, Ambassador Tihomir Stoytchev took part in a discussion dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews from the Holocaust. The event was organized by the former US Ambassador to Bulgaria (1990 – 1993) Hugh Kenneth Hill at the Orchard Ridge Village Center in Winchester, Virginia.
In his remarks Ambassador Stoytchev highlighted the role of the civil society, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church as well as the crucial role of leaders such as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Dimitar Peshev who opposed the deportation. The Ambassador’s presentation was focused on Bulgaria as a country of ancient history and rich cultural heritage, stable financial system and sustainable economic development, an attractive destination for foreign investments and tourism.
Ambassador Stoytchev presented Bulgaria’s foreign policy priorities, in particular the priorities of the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council and in the Western Balkans. He emphasized the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the United States and the excellent cooperation with the American Jewish organizations.
Ambassador Hill spoke about the events in 1943, which led to the rescue of Bulgarian Jews from the Holocaust.
