The National Day of Bulgaria was marked with a series of events and initiatives in the U.S. capital, underscoring the enduring friendship and strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the United States.
A formal reception took place at the historic Library of Congress, gathering representatives from the presidential administration, Congress, the diplomatic corps, leading think tanks, cultural institutions, as well as members of the Bulgarian community and friends of Bulgaria.
The official program commenced with the national anthems of Bulgaria and the United States, performed by opera singer Andrew Ridgeway.
Opening remarks were delivered by Bulgaria’s Ambassador to the United States, Georgi Panayotov; Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Sonata Coulter; and Congressman Joe Wilson, founder and co-chair of the Congressional Bulgaria Caucus. The event was also attended by Kimberly Bassett, Secretary of the District of Columbia.
In his address, Ambassador Panayotov emphasized Bulgaria’s rich historical heritage, the profound contribution of the Bulgarian alphabet to global cultural advancement, and the nation’s enduring pursuit of freedom and independence. He paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the name of this ideal. The Ambassador highlighted the longstanding diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and the United States—a partnership that continues to expand across key sectors. He underscored the importance of Bulgarian-American collaboration in defense, security, and energy, noting that these initiatives not only reinforce strategic ties but also enhance the security and prosperity of both nations.
122 years of diplomatic relations marked by continuous growth and strategic development was the central theme of the remarks by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Sonata Coulter. She extended her heartfelt congratulations to Bulgaria on its National Day and reaffirmed the deepening bilateral cooperation of mutual interest. DAS Coulter also commended the Embassy of Bulgaria for hosting a series of distinguished events.
Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) expressed his strong personal connection to Bulgaria and lauded the progress in bilateral cooperation. He reaffirmed the bipartisan commitment of the Congressional Bulgaria Caucus to further strengthening ties between the two nations.
Attendees were welcomed with traditional Martenitsi, handcrafted by students from the Bulgarian Educational and Cultural Center “St. Kliment Ohridski.”
On the occasion of Bulgaria’s National Day, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended official congratulations, highlighting the robust cooperation in energy and defense and reaffirming the United States’ commitment to continuing the strong friendship with Bulgaria.
As a gesture of recognition, Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued an official proclamation designating March 3, 2025, as “National Day of Bulgaria” in the U.S. capital. For the first time, the City of Miami, Florida, will also issue a proclamation in honor of Bulgaria—an acknowledgment of the country’s contributions and the significant role of the Bulgarian community in the United States.
As a symbol of friendship between the two nations, the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C. was illuminated in the colors of the Bulgarian flag.
